Yesterday, I had a delightful surprise upon viewing the birds in my back yard. I have been waiting for the four Painted Buntings to head North, but they arrived at their ususual time at the feeders. I then spotted some fluttering activity in my two avocado trees. I first saw a glimpse of bright yellow on the head with a dark patch around the ear. Quickly it was apparent that I had two to three beautiful Cape May Warblers feeding on the myriad Avocado buds. Shortly a Northern Parula was seen and a brilliant yellow Prairie Warbler stuck its' head up from a clump up leaves singing loudly. The activity increased. Two American Redstarts jumped from a leafless shrub into the birdbath, a Black and White peeked from the leaves of my blooming White Begonia, and a pair of Cardinals arrived at the feeder chasing off the Buntings. A gorgeous male Red-Winged Black Bird was showy with his epaulets glowing red/yellow against his black plummage. As I scanned the back of the tree a Baltimore Oriole was seen, also feeding from the buds. Doves,Catbirds,a Bronzed Cowbird and a Palm Warbler appeared on the scene. Finally a pair of Blue Jays were calling in alarm. The yard momentarily quieted as they took over the feeders. A kalideidoscope of color was a start to my day.
