This morning in Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP, approximately 20 sharp-eyed and enthusiastic birders joined together for the TAS walk. The wind shift was a bust last night, giving us 2 hours of WNW winds, not enough to boost migration on the extreme SE coast of FL. Our first stop for the female Western Spindalis was a dip, even though we tried again later. We listened and watched for the La Sagra's as we walked the trails, but we came up empty. However, Miami birder Dan Smyth found the flycatcher about 10:30 AM, 300 yards past the white gate and along the dirt Nature Trail. Dan found the bird after it called several times.
Birds of interest:
Swallow-tailed Kite (2 seen as we left the park)
Cooper's Hawk
Red-shouldered Hawk
Merlin (3-4, including one that nabbed a female cardinal)
White-winged Dove (good bird for the park)
Common Nighthawk (seen early)
Belted Kingfisher
Least Flycatcher (lingering wintering bird)
Great Crested Flycatcher
Yellow-throated Vireo
Blue-headed Vireo (4)
Northern Parula
Cape May Warbler (5)
Black-throated Blue Warbler (female causing excitement among spindalis-seekers)
Prairie Warbler (9)
Black-and-white Warbler (4)
American Redstart
Northern Waterthrush (seen by several who bushwhacked the lighthouse trail)
Common Yellowthroat
A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out today! Join us for the next TAS Cape Florida walk on April 24.
