Dan Smyth and I birded the road leading to Bear Lake Trail and Bear Lake Trail itself quite heavily today (about 5 hours). We managed to turn up an interesting assortment of migrants, lingering wintering birds, and breeding residents. Here are the notable birds:
Swallow-tailed Kite
White-crowned Pigeon (4)
Common Ground-Dove
Yellow-throated (1), White-eyed (11), Blue-headed (1), and Red-eyed Vireos (6)
Wood Thrush (4)
Indigo (1) and Painted Buntings (2)
...and nine warbler species, including Northern Parula, Magnolia Warbler (2), Prairie Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, and Hooded Warbler (2 males)
A short jaunt over at Flamingo Visitor Center area had about 20 or so Indigo Buntings up in the Mahogany Trees, a late Yellow-rumped Warbler, and a single male Shiny Cowbird amongst the Brown-headed Cowbirds.
