I birded the C-357 area this morning, starting around 7:45 and found Lincoln's, White-crowned, Grasshopper and Savannah Sparrows plus Painted Buntings. The White-crowned and Grasshopper Sparrows were particularly accomodating and provided great looks. Most of the sparrows were found near the intersection of the dirt road and the berm and a hundred yards to the west of the intersection. It looks like it pays to bird this area early; it was pretty dead by the time I left at 9:00.

I continued south to Flamingo, where I picked up the Bar-tailed Godwit in the company of John Boyd, Dottie Robbins, and several other birders. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was found on the flats across from the Flamingo visitor center, and a Clay-colored Sparrow was located on the back side of Eco Pond. Indigo Buntings (some in their jazzy spring plumage) were feeding in the short grass by the road as I headed north from the Flamingo area.
