A group of us were looking for the godwit today. We were starting to get worried as we saw flock after flock of willets, godwits and other shorebirds go by. The flew that landed on the shore quickly left. But then a little before 1, they started staying. They we noticed a flock coming in with an unidentified shorebird in second position. It was the Bar-tailed!
The Bar-tailed Godwit flew in shortly after 1pm today. It stayed for about an hour, with everyone present getting good views. It left a little after 2pm, when someone rode a bicycle right by the shorebird flock. Some stayed or returned, but the Bar-tailed was not among them.
The shorebirds have sometimes been up on the grass, so it's better to wait a bit away from the shore so as not to impede their arrival. The tides will be about 30 minutes later tomorrow. Although it was advertised as being there at high tide, it has actually been present 2-3 hours before high tide.
PS. The Whimbrel was present most of the time I was there today.
