Brown thrashers are nesting at Hoechoka Hammock (Sawgrass and university) and nest building is underway for mockingbrds. Flickers, red-bellieds are nesting but regrettable not on our side of the canal.

Mottled ducks are paired off and yesterday a boat tailed grackle got into a "bill in your face" dispute and to my surprise jumped up on the back of the duck and really started to whack it on the back of the neck. The duck broke away and took flight and the btg actually pursued it. Now I find that as really taking it personal. Anyone else ever see a grackle chase a duck?

In other news, at Lox NWR the great horned owl nest is showing two pretty big babies maybe about a week or two from leaving the nest. For TASers it is an easy view. For you photogs out there---you are going to earn your keep. The nest is tight to a cypress, about 35 feet up, with much spanish moss hanging down. You have to time your shutter release for when the moss is swaying away. Best sun time is 8:30-11:00 AM then shadows make a tough shoot even more difficult. It is worth the trip.

Buntings still plentiful up here,
