Twenty birders joined me on a glorious day. Wakodahatchee was incredible; Limpkins calling everywhere, all different sizes of Great Blue Heron and Anhinga chicks; Sora, Purple Gallinules in incredible light, Solitary Sandpiper!, lots of Marsh Rabbits, a Roseate Spoonbill, ciclids making their fish holes to deposit eggs (not good, I know, but interesting), Rough-winged and Tree Swallows with a small contingent of Purple Martins (their houses were empty). Bob Pace and I saw a Least Bittern which immediately hid after chasing a Green Heron out; John Hutchison had a Worm-eating Warbler in the parking lot.
Green Cay was beautiful but lacking; lots of Coots and Moorhens (no babies yet), only Blue-winged teal, no Green and no Shovelers, only a few Pied-billed Grebes (darn!); had a Coopers Hawk being attacked by Martins and the houses here were fully occupied, Sora, Limpkin and a calling Screech Owl; Least Sandpiper, another Solitary, Lesser Yellowlegs, Black-necked Stilts and a Spotted Sandpiper. Warblers were Yellow-rumped, Palm, Common Yellow-throat, Black & White.
Okeeheelee had Hootie but not much more, no Wood Ducks to be found although we looked and no Cranes. But with a great group of birders, it was still a wonderful first day of Spring.
