I took some first time birders to Wakodahatchee this afternoon hoping they would enjoy the experience. It took us probably a full 20 minutes just to get to the first turn because they were so engrossed in all they were seeing. At that first turn were 3 black-necked stilts -- the first of the season for me, the first ever for them (as were most of the birds they saw, actually). I lent them my binoculars and spent most of the time explaining what it was that they were seeing so I didn't have an exhaustive survey of the wetlands. By the time we left, the stilts had multiplied into 7 and my friends were totally hooked on "this nature thing".
