This morning, I, along with John Boyd, Carlos Sanchez, Bonnie Ponwith and Joy Ness, birded the fields near the C-357 Canal on SW 168 Street, concentrating on the area where the Le Conte's Sparrow was reported yesterday (see directions below). We found a good number of Savannah Sparrows and smaller numbers of Grasshopper Sparrows, plus both Indigo and Painted Bunting, but no other sparrow species. A couple of the Grasshopper Sparrows were very buffy on the face and breast and if not seen well, could have been mistaken for a Le Conte's. If searching for a Le Conte's, remember to look for significant streaking along the flanks; Grasshopper Sparrow lacks this field mark.
Directions: From Krome Avenue (SW 177 Avenue), drive west 3.0 miles on Richmond Drive (SW 168 Street). Park at a red gate on the left (south) side of the road, 0.2 miles past the water control structure at the C-357 Canal. Walk south along a dirt road, bearing right just before the raised berm. Continue west along this dirt road to an area around a raised mound.
