Corkscrew-really good show

Thursday trip to Corkscrew and environs produced sightings on wood stork in numbers that might seriously call into question the "Endangered Species" rank.

Cowbirds, shiny and brown headed were also present in good numbers. A nesting red-shouldered hawk is visible on the cut-across trail....but very difficult to photograph. Northern parula were present as were ruby-throated hummers, pileated woodpeckers, BG gnatcatchers and catbirds in great numers. Those cheeky litle fellas just sit on the boardwalk rail and watch you walk by. Just about every wax myrtle has catbird in it. Painted Buntings were present at all feeders and fearless. The lunch patio and the station where the wheelchair are stored are good viewing positions.

People, people people. About ten times the number now present at Green Cay and Wakodahatchee. Most polite, but the narrow boardwalk makes photography tough.

And who is the guy with the swamp buggy that pulls in for a pit stop at the bathrooms? That crowd of 15 people totally disrupted some good bird viewing for a quite a while. Noisy, boisterous, just downright rude.

And speaking of obnoxious, construction is underway on SR856 from US 29 to DeSoto Blvd. More houses, AveMarie entrance and of course probably the obligatory 2 golf courses per household. The cypress destruction is impressive.

Moral of the story: Corkscrew shows well. Go very early in the morning on a cold day and you will not be disappointed.
