The Smooth-billed Ani announced itself at 1800 and flew directly into the bushes in front of the lookout at the end of the asphalt road at Anhinga Trail. A few minutes later it came out and flew back into the bushes to the left, and slightly closer to the lookout. Unfortunately, it went deep into the bushes and nobody was able to see it perched. We did NOT see the bird earlier in the day between 1110 and 1245.
In addition to the Ani, we also saw three Snail Kites coming in to roost just to the right (south) of the lookout, but behind the trees. Earlier in the day, we saw an American Bittern on the other side of the canal, just before you get to the first boardwalk. This is the fourth time we've seen the bird in that area.
While walking around Eco Pond, we saw nine Swallow-tailed Kites flying high. We also saw two Swallow-tailed Kites hunting near the road coming back from Flamingo, and three more flying high over the Royal Palm parking lot.
