I searched from dawn until about 10:30 this morning along with several other birders without success for the Black-faced Grassquit. While I was looking for the Black-faced Grassquit Steve Siegel drove up and asked about the Olive-sided Flycatcher. Just as the words were coming out of his mouth I looked over into a dead pine to see a perched Olive-sided Flycatcher! Having heard over dinner just last night that there are no documented records for the Everglades, I ran about 200 yards to my car for a scope and camera. By the time that I got back Steve Siegel had his video camera set up and ready from which he documented Everglades National Park’s first Olive-sided Flycatcher. There have only been sight records before so it was great that Steve was able to video the bird. By the time I got my scope setup and ready with my video camera the bird flew farther into the pines not to be seen again my the time I left at 10:30. Other birders were alerted to the bird but were not able to get to the area on time.
I am sure that this is the same bird seen on Friday; it is pretty amazing that it is still in the same area. Today it was seen due west of the squiggly arrow sign about 100 yards south of the stick that I stuck in the ground on the right side of the road.
