Hi all: Yesterday, I had the opportunity to view a Greater Flamingo in Florida Bay off Tavernier.
Thanks to Pete Frezza, who works for the National Audubon Society there, and also runs his own fish guiding, and bird watching operation out of there.
Pete had received a report in the morning about a lone Greater Flaimingo in Florida Bay. After work, he took me out there, just ahead of the storm that rolled across the Upper Keys later that evening. It had started to rain, but, otherwise, the conditions were ideal. After about a half hour search, Pete found the bird in water probably about 2-3 feet deep. We had great looks from a repectful distance, of the bird, standing, and then, in flight; no 60x view through a scope with heat shimmer- a real thrill for a northern birder, especially after trying repeatedly from Snake Bight Trail, a stakeout of Buttonwood Canal, and a stuck-in-the mud kayak attempt. Florida birding is great. Cheers, Thor
