My Zeiss 10X40's are the same way. They are great for long distance, but terrible at close range. But, I found a way to get around it. When the bird is too close, I hold the binocs backwards. Bingo!
Learned this from my computer. The forward slash button is broken, so I just hold the keyboard upside down and hit the backslash.
