A couple of weeks ago as I finished my hike along the Snake Bight trail, I was watching another bird in my bins when I heard something land above my head. When I looked up there was an American Crow perched on a branch not 3 feet above my head, and it was obviously looking down at me. After a couple of minutes, I walked maybe 30 paces down the trail, and when I stopped again, the crow immediately flew and landed right over my head on another branch. I repeated this three more times, each time the crow doing the same thing. It was completely silent during this entire episode, and was peering down at me the whole time. It followed me probably for 1/5 a mile. I "cawed" like a crow (I have a good imitation), and it came closer to me to a lower branch. At this point I wondered whether it was accustomed to handouts, so i put out my hand with a small cracker in it and it did not react. I walked away with it still sitting there.
I'm not superstitious in any way, but I have to admit, the thought of a crow behaving this was somewhat gave me the creeps, though in reality the crow acted in a very curious manner toward me. I considered that it may have been nesting nearby or something like that and in its own way defending its territory, but it was probably the calmest I have seen a crow.
Any theories on what it was doing?
Thanks,
Jay Keller,
