I was looking SW, standing on the SW 196th Avenue levee, about a quarter mile south of the intersection of unimproved/unpaved Miramar Parkway where it will become 196th Avenue when connected to US-27 (at the intersection of trail marked "B" with the 196th Avenue levee, which runs from point "A" to "D" on the map at the accompanying link to an earlier blog).
The only ready access to this area is via private land, either Sunset Lakes or Harbour Lakes subdivisions. There is a locked gate at the western terminus of the paved portion of Miramar Parkway. It provides access to pedestrians, but there is no place to park, as on-street parking is prohibited in Miramar. It is otherwise cut off by canals and fenced private land. This area is part of the proposed C-9 impoundment that will eventually be deforested and inundated with up to four feet of water. The (unofficial) boundaries of C-9 are shown in this graphic. The area I call the "West Miramar ESL" is in the northeast corner of the proposed C-9 reservoir.
This area does not compare with most other Everglades locations, as there is much less diversity. Though SFWMD selectively cleared melaleucas and Brazilian Pepper about 5 years ago, it is again getting overrun with exotics.
