Today, I guided 19 students from Carver Middle School at Anhinga Trail, Everglades National Park. Plenty of water birds for them to see, including Wood Storks and Purple Gallinules, but the event that they'll likely remember was the alligator fight that broke out right on the trail! Two bulls on opposite sides of the trail were bellowing at each other all morning and finally decided to settle things right on the sidewalk. It was like a schoolyard brawl, with each combatant chomping down on the tail of the other. Of course, a crowd gathered; the Black Vultures were apparently hoping for a fight to the death. Many trail visitors, including my group, was temporarily held hostage by the brawl; ENP staff were called in to try to break things up, but moments before they arrived, the two bulls decided that enough was enough and called it a draw. As we bid them goodbye, both combatants simply lied there by the side of the trail, licking their wounds. What a show!
