The birding at the Chekika Unit of Everglades National Park was very good today -- the biggest highlight being a large mixed flock of Cedar Waxwings (15-20) and American Robins (35-40) flying and then landing inside the hammock/campground area. Other birds of note:
Black Vulture: over a hundred of these birds, everywhere!
Red-tailed Hawk: very pale, robust-looking Buteo with dark smudges on the leading edge of the wings -- probable Krider's Red-tailed
Black-crowned Night-Heron: ten or so around the pond in the campground
Wood Stork: about a dozen soaring with the thermals
Ruby-crowned Kinglet: one bird in the hammock, briefly flashed its spectacular crimson crest
Northern Waterthrush: two birds in a wet area next to the boardwalk
Swamp Sparrow: single, vocal bird near the boardwalk
