I just returned from a trip to Florida's west coast and am happy to report that the Scarlet Ibis is alive and well and still living in the Fort Myers Beach area. We first tried to catch this guy mid-afternoon on January 13th, but he and all his buddies were out doing whatever they do during the day.
We were fortunate enough to come back the following evening around 4:45 to find him on the far side of the pond behind The Church of the Ascension. A FedEx truck spooked the whole group just as we got there and they all flew to our side of the pond landing in a tree not too far from where we were standing. Of course there had to be a branch partially obscuring him but yah takes watcha yah takes.
This was a lifer for me so I am very happy!
Also present were White Ibis, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Cattle Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tri-colored Heron, Redhead Duck, Double-crested Cormorant, Anhinga, and a couple of gulls (I can't tell you which, sorry).
Rick
P.S. Ding Darling was much more active this year than last for us. We had the great pleasure of standing at the foot of a power pole with a Bald Eagle perched directly above us. He could have cared less.
