When I arrived, the bird was in the distance on the western side of the bay. It was preening and diving, generally heading in a northward direction. We lost it in the scope.
After showing my mom the Red-footed Booby, I went back over the bridge and north through the neighborhoods. At NE 88 St, there is a small opening toward the bay. I observed the Common Eider here merely feet from the shore (both the duck and I were quite startled!). I ran back to the car to get my camera.
The bird was still drifting generally north, inspecting the piers for shellfish. I managed to take a few terrible but identifiable photos for ebird just in case.
