Hi birders: Whilst in ENP today, checked out the possibility of renting a boat to head out to/past Snake Bight, as opposed to hiking Snake Bight Trail, to try to find American Flamingos.
Local birders should feel free to correct me, but I was told there are no escorted tours out into Florida Bay. At the marina in Flamingo, you can rent a powered skiff, but only into the inland waters. If you want to head out into Florida Bay, your choices are kayak, or canoe. The friendly staff at the marina will let you try out both. For kayaks I seem to remember a price of $28 for two hours. The operator said it would take two hours to get to the Snake Bight area from Flamingo, and, obviously, the same to get back. If you go at low tide, you have to follow a prescribed channel. The water is apparently no greater than 4 feet in depth, but is still not a place you want to flip, as there are " critters " out there.
The operator also mentioned, that, up until recently, there has been a flock of 26 flamingos out there, but he said he didn't know what affect the recent cold weather would have on their distribution. That's a question I would like to know the answer to, as well. Cheers, Thor
