The Great Black-Hawk was on Virginia Key today at 11:55 AM. It was on the east side of Arthur Lamb, Jr. Road, .7 miles north of pay station. It seemed comfortable in the area despite much human activity.

Both Bird-a-Day and the Patch Challenge are great learning tools; the former (my 9th year) requires strategy based on seasonal knowledge and the latter inspires careful observation of common birds in relation to their habitats. To paraphrase Kenn Kaufman, "The more you know common and local birds, the easier it is to find a rarity." Both competitions are fun ways to go crazy. Arthur Lamb Road is my Patch #2 so by paying more attention to pockets of habitat (instead of cruising through with the windows down!), today I picked up a few extra species. Thanks to Trey for the great website and to Carlos for proposing the patch challenge.
