I went to Deerings Dock this morning after dropping off my daughter to scan the bay. As I was walking down to the dock I could see a duck flying towards the dock. It was a single Merganser. I was happy because that was my Target bird for my Bird A Day list. I sat on the bench and began scanning the bay. I quickly had several more mergansers but they were further out. Then on the horizon I had a Northern Gannet. I Could see it clearly banking up and flying up and down moving south.

I also had a couple of other good birds out close to the horizon. A single loon was diving/feeding. Was easy to tell if from the many cormorants on the water.

Off the southeast point of the island to the north there were 4 Scoters. They were probably Black Scoters because I could see no white in the face of the birds, but they were a bit far out for me to be certain.

There were many terns early flying around near the dock mostly Royal but I did see at least one Forster's as a 2nd year Bald Eagle flew over head.

It was a good morning at the Deering Dock!

I'm using the Gannet for my bird a day and I hope to relocate the scoters tomorrow.
