I decided to bird Matheson Hammock County Park today to begin my patch year list effort and had a good day, with a total of 47 species including some nice highlights: Ruby-crowned Kinglet (2); ten species of warbler (Northern Parula, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Black-and-white, Yellow-rumped, Palm, Prairie, Orange-crowned (west side), Yellow (Cuban race, one in the mangroves), and Yellow-throated Warblers); three vireos (Blue-headed, White-eyed, and Yellow-throated); Yellow-bellied Sapsucker; and...
Two Brown-crested Flycatchers were observed on the east side of the park, in a grove of live oak trees beyond the bathrooms near the stone wall. Both birds were giving a soft, bubbly chattering when they were discovered. One of the birds was very shy and kept evading my binoculars, giving a clear and constant "whit" call as it flew from tree to tree. The other bird perched near the top of the tree and provided prolonged views -- fieldmarks included a large, all dark bill; pale edges on tertials; pale gray face and breast; pale yellow lower belly and undertail coverts.
