Returning from the Coot Bay/ENP CBC last night, Paul Bithorn and I stopped at Lucky Hammock at dusk to look for the Short-eared Owl. No owl showed up, but we did see three Lesser Nighthawks over the field east of the road. There were also two White-tailed Kites in the field south and west of the Hammock, one perched on a snag and one kiting high-up. The one in the air even stooped on a low-flying Northern Harrier that was hunting below it.

Earlier, while canoeing all over Coot Bay for the count, birding was pretty slow. Warbler activity along the shore was pretty limited, probably because of the windy conditions. We did get a couple of Barred Owls that were calling to one another back in the mangroves - an unusual sound to hear from the water. We considered that trip a great success, though, mostly because we didn't end up in the drink with the gators because of the heavy chop. Libation of choice to celebrate our safe return was Boont Amber Ale, a hoppy Northern California brew.
