Yesterday, January 2nd, 2010 the STA-5 CBC was held in Hendry County. The extreme cold (froe South Florida) and very high winds made birding difficult. I won't go into all the details for the entire count because I don't have all of the data here (Margaret England was the compiler) but I'll mention a few of the highlights from memory. First, the Great Cormorant that had been so obliging for several weeks prior was not found. Bummer. Participants did report and document two Cassin's Kingbirds, however. Other good birds seen were Canvasback, Short-tailed Hawk (dark morph), Stilt Sandpiper, three Great White Herons, over 6,000 Northern Rough-winged Swallows(!), as well as thousands of Tree Swallows and the usual high numbers of both whistling-ducks, Peregrine Falcon, etc. More later from either me or Margaret.
