Key West Christmas Bird Count to be held on Saturday, January 3, 2010

The Florida Keys Audubon Society will hold its annual Key West Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, Jan. 2. The CBC is a 110-year-old tradition there are thousands of counts held across the country every year in which participants try to survey all the birds in their region and create a snapshot of the health of the populations of various species. It is also a great deal of fun and a good way to learn about the wildlife of the Florida Keys. Organizers hope for the group to see more than 100 species during the day.

Counters will meet at 7:30 a.m. at Indigenous Park at the intersection of White Street and Atlantic Boulevard. No experience is required, and organizers will place novice birders in groups with more experienced birders. Lunch will be at a local restaurant and counters can participate for the morning or for the whole day.

To participate, or if your have any questions, please call coordinator Mark Hedden at 305-587-6059, or e-mail him at mark@boneisland.com. A $5 donation to the National Audubon Society is requested in order to cover data compiling costs.
