The bad thing about doing a big year is that any day without a year bird kinda sucks. I birded from pre-dawn to ~1:00 yesterday, and got a few decent birds, including La Sagra's Flycatcher, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Western Kingbird, Swainson's Hawk, Snail Kite, and American Bittern among others, but no year bird. I searched, in vain, for the White-crowned Sparrow about 3 light years past Gate 15, for a second time. I covered millions of miles looking for American Robins with no luck. This is one of the commonest birds in North America, but we don't have them down here. My theory is that, in geographic and climatic terms, South Florida is not really IN North America, but rather just close to it.
Now, with only 3 days left in the year, I think my chances for any new year birds is slim. Besides, I've whined all year, so why stop now. However, looking back at the year it's been pretty wonderful, and it's having the goal of a big year that gives you the drive to go out and look when you really feel like going home and relaxing.
So, instead of whining I'm thankful for this past year, and wish every one a very Happy, and birdie, New Year!
It's your turn now, Rock!
