Hi folks,

A juvenile Golden eagle was spotted just east of the Viera Wetlands last Friday. Strong northwest winds produced a heavy flight of Turkey Vultures that day. The eagle was heading steadily south. I suspect the bird continued south for as long as the winds remained favorable. As is the case with most rare birds, it was probably not the only one. It or others could settle down and spend the winter somewhere in south or central Florida. Golden eagles are more partial to rodents than fish which are preferred by Bald eagles. Large ranches or agricultural fields like those around Lucky Hammock or the cane fields of Palm Beach County could make a nice winter stay for a Golden Eagle in Florida. Keep an eye out!
