Everglades Park received a refreshing rain much to the frogs delight but farmers dismay. Tomato, bean and assorted crops now sit in flooded fields. Corn was just planted and from the looks of the soil could well float out today. My arrival was too late to scope for bird activity in most of the fields but the farm fields next to the turnpike coming in to Florida City are sheets of water and contained hundreds of ibis, egrets, herons and killdeers.
Water is flowing swiftly under the bridge at Anhinga and the trail has one cheeky anhinga with a nest right by the split between the board walks at the east end. I heard a pair of barred owls hooting at dusk and went back at nightfall and found one under the pavillion cover sitting on the "trail-guide" display....which may need to be cleaned today. Pictures were difficult as the rain was coming down and focus with telephoto is tough without a light on the topic.
Black vultures are at Royal Palm station in biblical numbers.
