This morning, I birded the fields between Lucky Hammock and the Annex. By using my scope, I was able to find lots of sparrows, etc. without ever stepping off Aerojet Road. Best bird was a Lincoln's Sparrow, seen on the east side of the road, at the speed bump just north of the yellow gates at the beginning of the Annex area. Grasshopper Sparrows are abundant at the moment, outnumbering even Savannah Sparrows. Northern Harrier, Sandhill Crane, Pileated Woodpecker, House Wren, Painted Bunting and Eastern Meadowlark were among the other species in the area.
While guiding a group of 40 fifth graders from Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary at Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park, I found an American Bittern that was completely surrounded by American Alligators. It was located at the overlook at the end of the paved walkway.
