Sid took the pictures from a blind using a telephoto lens. The feeder is on a heavy duty shepard hook and we moved it around so that he had a good view of the buntings.
I also get number of grackles, but only a few Blue Jays and White-wing Doves. The grackles and jays try to get the seed out of the bunting feeder but have a difficult time staying on the feeder due to its design. The grackles get tired and will join the doves on the ground feeding on the spilled seed. When the other birds are on the ground, the buntings are on the feeder. This particular feeder is designed for a smaller bird.
However, what I did to try and solve the problem of the bigger birds was to place another feeder about 30 feet away from the bunting feeder. I then used Pennington Wild Bird Seed and mixed in additional sunflower seed. The other birds would rather be at that feeder because it is not as difficult to get the seed. I then put Winn Dixie Wild Bird Seed in the bunting feeder, which has less sunflower seed and the buntings seem to prefer. I don't know if that makes sense, but it seems to be working out better.
