Toe and I went looking for sparrows this morning hoping for a few good ones to add to our year county list. We headed for Lucky Hammock and the field surrounding thinking they would be perfect.... The majority of the sparrows we found were in the field due west of Lucky Hammock. We ran into Scott S and Leah and the walked the fields with us. We flushed mainly Savannah Sparrows and Palm Warblers, but we also had 8-10 Grasshopper Sparrows and two Vesper Sparrows. There were also several Northern Harriers and Kestrels in the area. We also saw two White-tailed Kites hunting in the same fields. We had a flyby of 4-5 Sandhill Cranes.
We looked in the other fields nearby and along research road, but we only saw a few sparrows. Lucky Hammock was by far the best spot.
On the way home we stopped at Cutler Wetland and Toe found 4 Ruddy Ducks way in the center of the property looking from the north. We also saw Mottled Duck, Blue-wing Teal, Green-wing Teal, Northern Shoveler and American Widgeon.
Other birds of interest were a dozen Snipe, 300 Coot and 50+ Long-billed Dowitchers.
We both picked up two year county birds so we were pretty happy!
