With the time change, I had just enough time to get some birding in on Sunday morning. I started at the C-111E before sunrise and quickly found the Chipping Sparrow reported by Dan the day before. It was in the fenced-off area to your left when you walk down the canal's north bank about 150 yards past the gate. There were some painted buntings and a few other birds, but I left quickly to look for sparrows at Lucky Hammock. I found no other sparrows anywhere. Lots of the usual winter stuff around, especially a squadron of Merlins at Lucky Hammock that seemed to be keeping everything on their toes. Catbirds, Palms, Common Yellowthroats, House Wrens, Painted Buntings all in good numbers.

Only other highligts besides the Chipping Sparrow were a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at the Annex, a Least Bittern at Taylor Slough at the second bridge, a Marsh Wren at the next culvert after that bridge, a Magnolia Warbler at the C-111, and a Baltimore Oriole at Castellow. No sign of the Rufous, but the Ruby-throateds are viciously guarding their territory.
