Substituting for Roberto Torres, I was joined today by a total of 14 birders for today's South Dade carpool trip. Our first stop was Aerojet Road, where the best bird, a Philadelphia Vireo, was seen at the Annex. Other birds in the area included White-tailed Kite (seen and photographed by Danny Bales prior to our arrival), Northern Harrier, Short-tailed Hawk (both light and dark morph), Eastern Wood-Pewee, Least Flycatcher (several), Western, Eastern and Gray Kingbirds, House Wren, Brown Thrasher, 11 warblers (Tennessee, Parula, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Prairie, Palm, Black-and-white, Redstart, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush (seen by Danny Bales), and Common Yellowthroat), Blue Grosbeak, Painted Bunting and Bobolink. A quick stop at Coe Visitor Center produced just an Ovenbird. Castellow Hammock Park had several Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, White-winged Doves and a scattering of common warblers. At our last stop, Cutler Wetlands, we had a half-dozen Roseate Spoonbills, two Gadwall and a Pectoral Sandpiper.
