All:
Yesterday I had the honor of guiding Gene & Jo Hardy of Toledo, Ohio to some areas in Collier, Lee, Hendry & Palm Beach Counties. We did a "Big Loop" that basically started in Fort Myers (Lee County) via Immokalee (Collier County) via Hendry County via the Miami Canal (Palm Beach County) and then back to Fort Myers. Despite the record heat (felt like August!), we managed 68 species without much effort. Highlights, in no particular order) are as follows:
(Late) Gray Kingbird -- On CR835 near the Deer Fence Canal (Hendry County)
Black-bellied Whistling-Duck x5 -- In wetland on CR833, .5 miles North of Jct. CR835 & CR833 (Hendry County)
Painted Bunting (x1) -- friend's feeders/yard in Immokalee
Peregrine Falcon x1 On Blumberg Rd. near STA-5 (Hendry County)
White-winged Dove x12 -- friend's feeders/yard in Immokalee
Florida Scrub-Jay x10 -- Undisclosed area in Immokalee
Ruby-throated Hummingbird x1 -- friend's feeders/yard in Immokalee
Snail Kite -- several areas along CR846, CR833 & CR835 in Collier & Hendry Counties. Finally got to see one soaring in a thermal comprised of both vultures, Anhingas & Red-shouldered Hawk. Also saw one perched on a telephone wire along a canal.
Crested Caracara -- seen in many places in both Collier & especially Hendry Counties. However, we also saw one Corkscrew Rd. (CR850), east of Fort Myers in Lee County -- not too common for that county.
Common Myna x2 -- Burger King on SR80 in Clewiston.
Plus all of the "typical" waders as well as a few warblers (North Parula, Black-and-white, Pine & Palm). If anyone wants a complete list, let me know.
Good birding,
