Twelve birders joined me for today s carpool trip to Collier County. Highlights along CR 833 and CR 846 in Broward, Hendry and Collier Counties included Wood Stork, Snail Kite, Crested Caracara, Sandhill Crane and about a dozen Limpkins. Also seen were a first of season Eastern Phoebe and untold numbers of Belted Kingfishers. At Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, we had 12 species of warblers (Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Yellow-throated, Pine, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush and Common Yellowthroat), plus Downy and Pileated Woodpecker (the latter heard only), Eastern Wood-Pewee, Great Crested Flycatcher, White-eyed, Yellow-throated and Red-eyed Vireo, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Gray Catbird, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Painted Bunting. At Tigertail Beach on Marco Island, we had sixteen species of shorebirds (Black-bellied, Snowy, Wilson s, Semipalmated and Piping Plover, Greater Yellowlegs, Willet, Whimbrel, Marbled Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot, Sanderling, Semipalmated, Western and Least Sandpiper and Short-billed Dowitcher) plus Magnificent Frigatebird, Reddish Egret and Roseate Spoonbill. Burrowing Owls were seen along Lamplighter Road on Marco Island.
