Pale Cracker Butterfly at Birch State Park

Not a bird posting but it may be of interest to some.

This morning (9/7/09) while birding at Birch I got a good look at a slightly tattered Pale Cracker (Hamadryas amphichloe) on the trunk of the very large banyan-like exotic fig tree in the central picnic area. I first noticed it when it kept trying to land on my shirt and I could have easily grabbed it but I didn t know I had something unfamiliar until it landed head down on the tree and I got a good look at it. I made the identification when I got back to the car and found a match for it in Butterflies Through Binoculars.

This butterfly is a rare stray native to the West Indies inluding Cuba, Central America, and Northern South America.
