TAS Fairchild-Matheson Walk 9/5/09
An enthusiastic group of birders from as far away as California & Washington DC joined the TAS locals anxious for fall migrants gathered yesterday morning for the TAS Birdwalk to both Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden & Matheson Hammock. At Fairchild we followed the James A Kushlan Bird Trail, part of a larger Bird Conservation Program being initiated at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in collaboration with Tropical Audubon Society.
The highlight of the morning was the number of warblers seen that included a Golden-winged Warbler found feeding high in the Chrysophylum (not sure of the species) with a mixed flock of birds in the center of the Warbler Zone . In Matheson Hammock in the pond apple orchard were two female Orchard Orioles feeding on the fruit of a strangler fig. Also of interest during the walk were several groups of Eastern Kingbirds and two large flocks of common nighthawks making a bee lining south.
