Anyone attempting to penetrate Lucky Hammock from the south side would likely get tangled in the many webs of the beautiful Argiope spider pictured in the link below. It's Argiope aurentia, the big Black-and-Yellow Garden Spider. Interestingly, several of the webs also contained tiny Dewdrop Spiders (Argyrodes sp.), each looking like a drop of mercury with legs. The Dewdrop spiders don't make webs of their own; they just hang out in other spiders' webs hoping to steal a meal.

The photo was taken last Saturday, and I just have to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Larry and Christine Manfredi and several others in the local birding community for hauling my stuck car out of the muddy field. The incredible mid-day heat and the swarming mosquitos made being stuck there alone a pretty scary experience (not that I panicked, though I almost did). A cell phone call brought Larry to the rescue.
