I am posting this for Andy Kratter.
The Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) had a knock-down, drag-out, marathon meeting on Saturday (15 August 2009), in which we assessed 51 new submissions, finished off two unresolved previous submissions, and dusted off three other older decisions for new assessment.
In the course of our deliberations, we added FOUR new species and one new subspecies to the Official State List. These are:
Greater Sand-Plover. FOSRC 09-738. Duval County 14 - 26 May 2009. photos, video. 2nd Western Hemisphere record.
White-throated Swift. FOSRC 09-729. Escambia Co. 9 Apr 2009. photos, video. 1st record east of Mississippi
White-eared Hummingbird. FOSRC 09-731. Bay Co. August 2004. photos. 2nd record east of Mississippi
Common Greenshank. FOSRC 09-768. "Tampa". 23 May 1882. specimen. Only other east coast records are from Newfoundland.
"Vega" Herring Gull (=L. a. vegae) FOSRC 09-761. Volusia Co., January 2009. First record from eastern North America.
The four new species bring the Official State List to 507 species. All five taxa are added to the review list.
Six Iceland Gulls were accepted at the meeting, and there are now more than 20 accepted records for the State (and a great majority of these in the past five years). We voted to remove Iceland Gull from the Review List.
I have responded to most submitters with results of other submissions. Let me know if you have any questions. We want to thank the army of Florida birders who are adding to the rich tradition of birding in this State.
Keep up the reporting.
Andy Kratter
Secretary, FOSRC
