Trey and I headed south today in search of any migrants that may be around. Although things are still slow, we had a few interesting birds. At Lucky Hammock we had a few Redstarts and Prairie Warblers, a Black-and-white, a male N. Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, and two White-tailed Kites to the west. At the Annex we had many more Redstarts and Prairies, a couple of Black-and-whites, a Louisiana Waterthrush, and our best bird, a young male Orchard Oriole.
The ag fields around 217th Ave. had almost no shorebirds except for a group of Black-bellied Plovers and some Killdeer, a couple of Least Sandpipers, and a Spotted Sandpiper. Conspicuously absent were Upland and Pectoral Sandpipers. A stop at a fenced pond along 344 St. Produced 2 Solitary Sandpipers and a pair of small very weird looking ducks. I have no idea what they were. Trey, pictures?
At Cutler Wetlands conditions are looking good for shorebirds if they ever get here. New arrivals were 3-4 Stilt Sandpipers, plus a couple of Semipalmated Sandpipers, Semi Plovers, a bunch of Least, a lone SB Dowitcher, both Yellowlegs, and BN Stilts. Our best find here were 2 Black Terns, one in mostly breeding plumage. Black Terns are not an easy find in Dade.
