While on a walk around campus today we had our first Blue-gray Gnatcatcher of the fall at FIU. We had seen them in ENP last weekend but were awaiting their arrival here. As we walk by the Ryder Business Building we heard the familiar zeet, zeet over our heads, unfortunately it was the only migrant we saw during our stroll.
Yesterday afternoon we saw a group of Common Nighthawks flying over the GC building at FIU as we were leaving home. I stopped counting at 55 nighthawks because the birds were dipping below the roof line and reappearing making it hard to accurately count these birds. To give an estimated number of birds I would have to say it was between 75-90 nighthawks. We also noted the lack of calls from the birds and that they were not dive bombing insects, the birds seemed to be in migration mode. Just as fast as they appeared they disappeared, they were traveling south at a constant pace.
