This morning I visited the area where Toe and Trey found Upland Sandpipers on Saturday, on the dirt portion of SW 217 Avenue south of SR 9336. In the field south of the paved intersection described by Toe, at a spot where a dirt track to the east is marked by a sign for AMG Farms, I found a Buff-breasted Sandpiper among the many Killdeer. I later found a single Upland Sandpiper in the same field. Many swallows, including Bank and Cliff, were perched on the wires at the west end of the field. A White-tailed Kite was perched on a tree near the beginning of Aerojet Road.
I spent from 8:00 - 9:30 AM at Long Pine Key in Everglades National Park, but failed to find any Western Spindalis. Many of the usual pineland species were tallied, including Northern Bobwhite (heard), Common Nighthawk, Northern Flicker, Great Crested Flycatcher, Pine Warbler and Eastern Towhee.
I stopped at Cutler Wetlands on the way home; an immature Bald Eagle flushed most of the birds just as I arrived. Those that remained included a Mottled Duck, several Black-necked Stilt, a Lesser Yellowlegs, a Willet and two Short-billed Dowitchers.
