Jeanette & I visited Wakodahatchee to see the young of many Common Moorhens and Purple Gallinules. Observations were ideal as many birds were next to the boardwalk. Other birds noted were 3-4 Least Bitterns, Great Blue Herons, Tricolored Herons, Little Blue and Green Herons, Mottled Ducks, Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets.
Green Cay offered an abundance of Common Moorhens and Purple Gallinules along with Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and their young. Two Limkins allowed us to get extremely close while they were preening and snailing next to the boardwalk. Other birds noted were Tricolored Herons, Mottled Ducks, and a few Great Blue Herons.
We headed East into Boynton Beach and visited the county park of Ocean Isle Beach(?) where we saw several Black-hooded Parakeets feeding in the Seagrape trees by the concession stand. Construction of a new seawall prevented us from walking over to a section of land that had extensive lengths of sandy shoreline that might be a good place for beach & shore birds later in the year.
Last stop was Griffin Rd. and the airport where we managed sing up a (the?) Smooth-billed Ani. I knew if I went enough times, stastically, I was going to see the bird. Sure enough, I hit the jackpot. Jeanette spotted the Ani on the other side of the canal(north side). Think of a Boat-tailed Grackle on steroids! Just one bird was seen and we wondered if there is more than just the one. Good, close looks at the Ani was a treat to end the afternoon of of some hot, summertime birding.
