Predators

Was waiting for a relative in the parking lot of an office center on Sunset and 92 late afternoon. The lot was surrounded by some pines trees. A Shrike was in one of the pines eating a Cuban Tree Frog. The frog was headless by now. The shrike dropped the frog and flew off as a Cooper's Hawk landed in the same tree. The hawk then chased a Collared Dove that flew by. Don't know the outcome (flew around a building). An Evening Bat also flew overhead in the same spot. Lots of action in fifteen minutes!

Last week I learned that Mockingbirds can be predators too. I thought they just ate insects and berries but while in another parking lot in Kendall (guess parking lots can be exciting too!) a mocker landed on the ground and caught a large male cuban brown anole. It would wildly shake it in the air and throw it on the ground. It ate the tail and arms and afterwards flew into a tree out of sight with the lizard. Seemed too big for it to swallow.
