The number of cotton rats is on the rise at Hoechoka Hammock and with that event are now come the the Hawks. Red shouldered and Coopers are in the area. This cycle has been the norm since these grounds were developed. Rat numbers up, hawk numbers up, rat numbers down, hawks move on. And yet another exciting event--the appearance of the first ever on this site of a cottontail rabbit. It is often seen in the early morning. Now a cottontail may not be as exciting as bronzed cowbird but it is the first in 12 years and we hope it marks a return of some of the indigenous creatures that were here before Parkland went civilized---okay, how about developed?

Three otters are also in the canals adjacent to the property and appear generally when we don't have cameras at the ready. Ditto for the brown thrashers.

The heat, humidity and daily downpours have assured a very generous growing season. We now use our seeded limbs from stopper, beauty berry, lancewood and the lilke to feed the critters at the bird and wildlife hospitals. It gives them a chance to feed on what's out there when they get released.

Otherwise just the lazy hazy crazy days of summer.
