I'm not positive that cleared lots were the major culprit for the decline of the Anis. There are still lots of brushy lots around Krome, yet there isn't a healthy Ani population there (if there is a permanent population at all).

In Venezuela, Smooth-billed Anis are abundant and commonly found in well watered, disturbed grassy areas which have recently been deforested, including grassy lots right in the middle of towns. Their habitat can be pretty fragmented there with houses and fields of crops taking most of the space, so why wouldn't they do well in areas like Krome which are similar or perhaps even less developed? Also, they didn't seem that picky about the kinds of grasses or the height of the grass they were living in.

Another thing I'd like to add about Smooth-billed Anis is that I've seen them soar like raptors, Anhingas, etc. That's probably how they can island hop and how they got here in the first place...

They are such neat birds.
