I just read Jeff the Other's post about brown thrashers having a population boom near him. Here in the Redland I see a few of them daily when I walk the dogs (got the dog a dog so plural now) and I am surprised at how many there are, I've lived in this neighborhood for seven years and never really seen them in the summer before. A friend suggested it was because of the abandoned house on our street, because they like to nest in barns. The house, sold at peak of market in 2007 then immediately burned, abandoned, gutted, and boarded up, is now trying to do a "short sale" and while I hope nice people move in (birders would be great), I will definitely miss the nesting screech owls that nested there a few months ago, and hopefully the brown thrashers will be back next summer too. I think I'll put up a screech owl house so they won't feel evicted. Any suggestions for enticing the brown thrashers to stick around?
