I haven't been back to the roost since checking it last week. In previous years once the number of birds gets over a few thousand my estimates have been based on a general impression of the overall arrival flight. The most difficult part is estimating how many martins are in the roost trees as hundreds fly into the trees and as many fly out as thousands more wheel around high overhead in the quarter hour or so before near darkness when all the birds dive in for the evening.
